Helen’s Nuclear Energy Program Site Assessments Progressing

Helen has identified several potential site options in the Helsinki metropolitan area that, based on preliminary assessments, could be technically, commercially, and environmentally viable locations for a small modular nuclear power plant.

As part of its goal to phase out combustion-based energy production, Helen launched its nuclear energy program in autumn 2024. The program is currently in the preparatory phase, which includes a process for mapping potential plant sites. Based on this mapping, Helen has preliminarily identified, among others, the Vuosaari power plant area as a potential site and will begin assessing the area’s suitability for nuclear energy production.

“The area in question is already in use for energy production. Next, we will begin more detailed studies to thoroughly evaluate the area’s potential as a site for a small modular reactor,” says Janne Liuko, Head of Helen’s Nuclear Energy Program.

Helen will continue to assess other identified potential sites and will announce additional areas proceeding to more detailed investigations at a later stage.
